Measuring Poly bags: The basics
When considering poly bag sizes, it’s important to be able to read the manufacturer’s specifications. If you want to measure a poly bag from any size or shape, you must first measure its width. Check out the chart below for a quick reference of how to measure poly bags according to their design
Measuring poly bags : A few considerations
Take measurements of your product first.
The first step in determining what size poly bags you’ll need is to measure your product completely. Doing so will help you choose the correct size bag.
Look at the plastic bag’s opening size. It’s always a good idea to check whether the opening of the poly bag will be large enough to accommodate the product’s unusual dimensions.

Flat Poly Bags
Example:
W = 8″ & L = 18″
Dimensions = 8″ x 18″
Gusseted Poly Bags
Example:
W = 8″, G = 4″, & L = 18″
Dimensions = 8″ x 4″ x 18″
Wicketed Poly Bags
Example:
W = 10″, L = 12″, & Lip = 1.5″
Dimensions = 10″ x 12″ x 1.5″
Barrel Liners
For bag width: D x 1.57 + 2″
Example: D = 23″
23″ x 1.57 + 2″ = 38″
For bag length: D + H + 6″ tie off
Example: D = 23″ & H = 36″
23″ + 36″ + 6″ = 65″
Bag Dimensions = 38″ x 65″
Palette Covers
Length & Width: L + 2 x W + 2
Example: L = 50″ & W = 42″
50″ + 2″ x 42″ + 2″ = 52″ x 44″
Height: H + (W x 0.5)
Example: H = 40″ & W = 42″
40″ + (42″ x 0.5) = 61″
Dimensions = 52″ x 44″ x 61″
Box Liners
Length & Width: L + 2 x W + 2
Example: L = 50″ & W = 42″
50″ + 2 x 42″ + 2″ = 52″ x 44″
Height: H + W + 6″ tie off
Example: H = 40″ & W = 42″
40″ + 42″ + 6″ = 88″
Dimensions = 52″ x 44″ x 88″
Bags on a Roll
Example:
W = 22″ & L = 18″
Dimensions = 22″ x 18″
Plastic Tubing
Example:
W = 14″
Dimension = 14″
How To Choose the Right Poly Bag to Fit Your Needs
You should clearly identify the purpose that the bag will be intended for. You don’t want the bag to be flimsy and break apart when heavy items are put into it. The extra cost of better bags is worth the cost as double bagging is not going to save you money.
